| Control What People Say? #52 by Joseph Prescia You can not legislate a clean heart. Neither can a government genuinely change a population with a law. Just because a law is passed that says “no sexual harassment” does not mean that people will obey. If one spends their time enjoying Playboy or Playgirl articles, what type of sexual actions do you think can result? It would be even more difficult for that person to control their speech and actions according to some written law. Why? Because whatever diet we feed our minds will result in corresponding actions. When a person can not control their own tongue government has thought it their responsibility to step in and make a law to attempt to control what people say. Scripture tells us that you can not control the tongue by trying to control the tongue. When Jesus confronted some religious leaders he told them where the problem came from and where it needed to be corrected. Matthew 12:34-35 34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. 35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. (KJV) The heart is where we store the things that we allow into the mind. The heart is the innermost part of the mind. If you feed your mind on a diet of CNN, FOX, world problems, political envy and strife, then you will speak what’s in your heart. You can not do otherwise. So the key is to feed your mind with the right diet. If you choose to feed your mind on a diet rich in Scripture which includes hope in Christ and the wisdom of God, then your words will be salted with godly truth rather than worldly lusts. And the news is loaded with worldly lusts. Jesus told these religious leaders that “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.” If you store good things in the treasure of your heart, good things will come forth. Ever hear someone say “Gosh he’s got a good heart?” That is Biblically accurate because out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. Forcing people into so-called “political correctness” is vain. Why? Because government is attacking the symptom rather than the cause. One may have the satisfaction of either stifling or endorsing speech with controls but society doesn’t get any better. The correct way to genuinely change actions is to change your mental diet. If you seek the best available, then you will need to go to God and His Word. Anything else is second-rate. Proverbs 16:23 23 The heart of the wise teacheth his mouth, and addeth learning to his lips. (KJV) |
