Abortion Rights?   #78
By Joseph Prescia

One group wants the freedom to do whatever they want to their own bodies and another group wants to legislate their morality. Who is right? The first question that has to be answered is “what does the Word of God say when life begins?” If you are seeking a religious answer or a manmade answer you will be wrong Biblically.
The Word of God declares that the first man, Adam, became a living soul at first breath.

Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. (KJV)

On the other side of the situation, when a person takes their last breath they are considered dead. Breath life determines a beginning or an ending Biblically. Just because one sperm out of 500,000,000 unites with one egg does not constitute human life.

But doesn’t abortion cheapen life? One has to consider the motive for an abortion. Most often it’s because of convenience to have sex whenever one wants to, whether unmarried, adulterous or otherwise. RARELY is it ever for life-threatening situations.

Several subjects in life require a Biblical perspective, like marriage, childbearing, divorce, cloning, etc. But very often, even Christians have failed to seek out Biblical truth by studying the Scriptures. Instead they have lethargically approached the Scriptures and yielded to their denominational opinion.

As United States citizens we not only must restore lost values to our society but at the same time we must not take away the individual’s higher right to choose. ALL individuals of our great country have the freedom to sin before God or to live righteously. People will decide, when they are ready, to heed to one or the other.

Personally, I think that abortions are a cheap copout to responsibility. I am not promoting them. But freedom of individual choice is one of the principles promoted by God (Galatians 5:1, John 8:32,36) and by which our country was founded upon. We don’t want religious zealots from the far left or the far right enslaving Americans. That’s why our Constitution speaks highly of individual choice and freedom. As American citizens we need to live by our Constitution.

In Exodus 21:22-24, if a woman was hurt by an individual and had a miscarriage a fine was imposed by the judges. This would indicate that a miscarriage was not considered murder. On the other hand, if murder was committed, then the death penalty was adequate punishment. One must read and study the entire Word of God for context’s sake to arrive at a conclusion on any subject. Emotion or personal opinion needs to line up with the written Word in order to be right with God.
